Post #1: Introduction to our project and goal!
Blog #1
1.1 Who are we?
1.2 What is our goal?
Our goal is to contribute to the 10th SDG goal: Reducing inequalities. It is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations back in 2015. This SDG aspires to guarantee that everyone has equitable access to opportunities and resources. The objective is to establish a fair society in which everyone may prosper and realize their full potential. In our projects, we will mainly focus on racial inequalities.
1.3 Why race?
Many domestic helpers or foreigners dwell at Hong Kong or Singapore, both big cities. It is important to teach people and locals how to treat migrants or people of different backgrounds the same way, so that our society can become more kind and loving. Big cities have much diversity in work or school settings living and working in close proximity. In such environments, it is crucial to promote mutual understanding and respect between all people and to prevent prejudice.
1.4 What do people have to say?
Kenzo, 15: "People have been treating me unfairly since primary school because of my brown skin,"
Anaika, 17: "My classmates always tease me because I can't speak Chinese fluently,"
Yati, 33: “Even in a city like Hong Kong, I sometimes still get mistreated on the streets because of my skin color,”
Do you want people to treat you like that? Just like any other individual, you and I deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of our race, ethnicity, language abilities or any other characteristics. Discrimination takes a huge toll on one’s mental and emotional well-being, so think twice before making a distasteful comment.
1.5 So what can we do to help?
1. Keep reading these blogs ;)
2. Be more inclusive and don't make fun of your classmates for their poor Chinese/
pronunciation
3. Have an open-mindset and treat people equally disregarding their culture
Martin Luther King: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Racial discrimination is inexcusable.
And it's not cool to be racist.
