 How to Support Local Communities Fighting Against Racism in HK and Singapore


        Racism has been a pressing issue in many societies, and even bustling cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are no exceptions. Even though we have vibrant and diverse culture in our cities, there are still many instances of racial discrimination and prejudice towards race. Luckily, many individuals an organizations and working to combat racism and promote equality for us! Here's how we can support their efforts as citizens and students.

        1. Recognizing local organizations and initiatives 

Perhaps contrary to popular belief, many self-proposed organizations apart from the government are dedicated to fighting racism and promoting social justice. To support their efforts and to make our society a better one, do check out the following local organizations:

Hong Kong
        
        1. The Hong Kong Unison: https://unison.org.hk/en: A non-profit organization that advocates for rights of ethnic minorities 

        2. The Zubin Foundation: https://www.zubinfoundation.org/: Provides scholarship to ethnic minority students in need, employment support to those unemployed, mentoring and health promotion

Singapore 

        1. OnePeople.sg: https://www.onepeople.sg/ A Singapore-based organization that promotes racial and religious harmony through public education 


Do spend some time looking though their pages and look at their achievements in the websites, and consider donating to them, volunteering your own time to contribute, or show up to public events to show your support for their work.

        




2. Amplify the voices of communities 

Some of the communities trying to spread their message may not always manage to get their content across due to its little following/recognition. If you have connections, don't be shy to use your social media platforms and personal networks to share their content and stories, or by sharing their stories and encouraging your friends and family to do the same.
